Role SummaryCAST is developing credentials and certifications to help qualify competence in and alignment with Universal Design for Learning (UDL) best practices. These credentials and certifications along with a growing body of UDL resources are available on a system called Learning Designed, enabling educators across the globe to learn more about UDL and voluntarily demonstrate their competence. Critical to the success of Learning Designed is an exceptionally well designed, accessible, world-class user experience. CAST is hiring a
User Experience (UX) Design Lead to oversee the user experience and user interface definition and design for the Learning Designed platform. This person will work under the direction of the Director of Educational User Experience Design and with CAST’s Art Director and other designers to develop consistency, beauty, and maintainability.
Primary Responsibilities
- Lead the design and development of Learning Designed, including front and backend experiences, instructional content design, tool development, and professional learning experiences
- Lead to envision, design, and implement learning experiences that leverage educational research and technology, and that are optimized for individual variability among all users
- Assess and revise Learning Designed's information architecture; create a system for its UX patterns and UI components library
- Understand and balance the business and educational requirements and user needs; draw upon user data and market research to make evidence-based decisions
- Design and facilitate focus groups, user experience interviews and usability testing; evaluate, synthesize results and define user requirements
- Create user flows, storyboards, wireframes, and prototypes; turn wireframes and prototypes into engaging, usable, effective, and visually sophisticated user-centered design solutions
Required Skills/Abilities
- Expert knowledge of user-centered design principles, UX best practices, trends and emerging technologies
- Atomic design knowledge and experience creating UX and UI pattern libraries
- Familiar with current design tools and platforms (e.g. Figma), and agility for adopting new ones
- Skilled with front-end code (html5, CSS, and javascript) — enough to work collaboratively and experimentally to explore and shape ideas, and for handing off design specifications to developers
- Self-motivated and self-directed; a collaborative team player
- Committed to design for inclusion and accessibility. Understanding of and passion for Universal Design for Learning is a plus

Education and Experience*
- Bachelor’s Degree or higher in User Experience Design, Interaction Design, Graphic Design, HCI, or related discipline preferred (or document equivalent academic plus professional experience)
- 5+ years experience leading and executing design across UX domains, preferably in the education space
- Experience creating, applying, and maintaining design systems and libraries
- Solid experience and comfort working on development of online platforms that share learning resources and promote best practice development
- Solid experience in designing user experiences for professional development
- Required: Portfolio demonstrating solid design foundation, design thought process, interaction, and UI skills, and talent and facility with a range of design aesthetics
